The Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja has ordered the return of Godwin Emefiele, the former Central Bank Governor of Nigeria, to the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
This decision follows Emefiele's arraignment on 23 counts of alleged offenses including abuse of office, accepting gratifications, and corrupt demand. Emefiele, along with co-defendant Henry Isioma-Omoile, pleaded not guilty to the charges. While Emefiele was remanded in EFCC custody, Isioma-Omoile was returned to Ikoyi Correctional Centre where he was previously held.
The court adjourned the case until April 11 to hear bail applications and begin trial. This marks the fourth criminal case against Emefiele since his removal from office last June. Defense counsel requested bail for Emefiele, citing his status and willingness to attend trial, while the prosecution did not oppose bail but requested closed sessions for certain witnesses.
The judge reserved ruling on bail and ordered Emefiele's remand until the next hearing.
