In a remarkable display of community solidarity, prominent leaders from Cross River North Senatorial District have mobilized over N135 million to repatriate the remains of Second Republic Senate President, the late Dr. Joseph Wayas.

Sylvanus Anyawho, President of Basang Nation, Wayas' immediate ancestral community, revealed this significant effort. Despite appeals to both the Nigerian Senate and the Cross River State government, the community's pleas have gone unanswered.

Anyawho expressed frustration at the lack of response, echoing the sentiments of Amos Item, the paramount ruler of Obanliku LGA. Anyawho emphasized that the burial of the former Senate President is a top priority for the community and warned of potential protests if their demands are not met.

Wayas passed away at the age of 80 in a London hospital in November 2021. While the government of Prof Ben Ayade reportedly allocated N200 million for the repatriation and funeral arrangements, controversy surrounding the committee and family disputes ensued.

Nonetheless, a notable citizen based in London, Mr. Afen Agaji, played a crucial role in facilitating the identification and repatriation process of Wayas' remains, providing a glimmer of hope amidst the challenges.
