Dangote Cement has invested over $280 million in compressed natural gas (CNG) technology, becoming Nigeria's largest operator of CNG trucks. This initiative supports President Tinubu's drive for cleaner energy, aims to transition the fleet to CNG by 2026, and aligns with Nigeria's climate goals.
In a strong endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's initiative to promote compressed natural gas (CNG) as a cleaner energy alternative, Dangote Cement Plc has invested over $280 million in CNG technology and infrastructure. This investment positions Dangote as Nigeria’s largest operator of CNG trucks, significantly bolstering the country’s transition towards more sustainable energy solutions.
President Tinubu has been a vocal advocate for the deployment of CNG, aiming to create a more efficient energy landscape that supports economic growth. His administration's strategy includes distributing one million free CNG conversion kits to commercial vehicles, enhancing the use of Nigeria’s vast natural gas resources in the transportation sector.
During a recent event, Tinubu highlighted the critical importance of natural gas in transforming Nigeria’s public transport and energy systems. He asserted that moving to CNG is not just an environmental imperative but an economic necessity.
As part of its strategy, Dangote Cement plans to convert its entire fleet to CNG by mid-2026, with an initial order of 3,100 mono-fuel CNG trucks. The company’s Group Managing Director, Arvind Pathak, noted the importance of building robust CNG fueling infrastructure to support this transition.
Additionally, Aliko Dangote emphasized that these investments align with Nigeria's goals under the Paris Agreement for net-zero emissions by 2060, demonstrating the company's commitment to a greener future while supporting national energy independence.
