Some residents of Kebbi State took matters into their own hands on Saturday night, as they stormed a government warehouse in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital, and made off with food items.

Defying security operatives stationed at the warehouse, the hoodlums also targeted private warehouses and shops in the area, looting essential supplies.

The incident, occurring amidst a cost of living crisis exacerbated by petrol subsidy removal and currency fluctuations, reflects growing desperation among the populace.

Muhammadu Gwadangwaji, Chairman of the food vendors association, lamented the destruction, stating that security forces' efforts were futile in deterring the looters.

Governor Nasir Idris's Chief Press Secretary, Ahmed Idris, condemned the incident, highlighting that the stolen items were intended for distribution to the people.

The government has vowed to secure its warehouses to prevent future occurrences. Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Nafiu Abubakar, remained unavailable for comment.
