Former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Allison-Madueke, has requested prayers as she faces multiple allegations and charges of bribery and corruption in the United Kingdom, as brought forward by the United Kingdom National Crime Agency (NCA).
During a Plea and Trial Preparation hearing in Courtroom 14, Allison-Madueke, along with Doye Agame and Olatimbo Ayinde, expressed her desire for the case to proceed swiftly and to move on with her life, according to her lawyer. She appeared before a Southwark Crown Court judge.
Following the hearing, a prominent member of the Nigerian community in the United Kingdom, who is acquainted with the former minister, revealed that Allison-Madueke had asked for prayers. He expressed sympathy for her situation, describing her as a once-powerful figure who now seeks support.
Meanwhile, a lawyer representing his client, Benedict Peters, commented on the case, stating that he believes the case is weak and won't hold up.
Emeka Ozoani (SAN), another lawyer, argued that the NCA had spent years investigating the case and questioned the use of taxpayer money in justifying their actions.
The allegations against Allison-Madueke involve benefiting from cash and kind in relation to multi-million pounds worth of oil and gas contracts awarded during her tenure in former President Goodluck Jonathan's administration between 2010 and 2015.
The trial is expected to last between seven to ten weeks, commencing not earlier than November 2025. The judge, Judge Baumgartner, suggested a more suitable start date in January 19, 2026, to avoid disruptions during the Christmas break. Allison-Madueke is scheduled to appear in court next in February of the following year.
