Controversial influencer Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan were arrested in Romania on Tuesday following the execution of two European arrest warrants issued by UK judicial authorities. The charges relate to sexual offenses and the exploitation of individuals on UK soil.
A Bucharest court has ordered a 24-hour detention for the brothers. Andrew Tate, known for his misogynistic views and significant online presence, is already awaiting trial in Romania for separate charges of human trafficking, rape, and forming a criminal group for the sexual exploitation of women.
The arrest comes after lawyers representing four women, now in their late twenties and early thirties, threatened Tate with a lawsuit in English courts in June 2023. The allegations include sexual assault, violent rapes, serious physical assault, and controlling and coercive behavior, spanning the period from 2013 to 2016 when Tate resided in the UK.
In response, Tate's spokesperson issued a statement on Tuesday asserting the brothers' unequivocal denial of all allegations and criticizing what they perceive as an exploitative use of the legal system. The legal proceedings in both the UK and Romania add another layer of complexity to the controversial figure's already tumultuous public profile.
