Abdulrasheed Bawa, former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has been released from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS). He had been in detention since June following his suspension by President Bola Tinubu due to allegations of abuse of office, particularly the accusation by former Zamfara State governor and Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, that Bawa demanded a $2 million bribe from him, an allegation he denied. Peter Afunanya, DSS spokesman, confirmed Bawa's release on Wednesday.

The release came after significant pressure from influential figures in government circles, with pleas to President Tinubu to order the DSS to release Bawa. His detention had included the ransacking of his home and office by DSS operatives. A video of Bawa being welcomed by his wives and children has circulated widely. His release follows the conclusion of DSS investigations. Bawa's suspension had been initiated to facilitate a proper investigation into his conduct while in office as the EFCC chairman.
