The Department of State Services (DSS) in Nigeria has issued a stern warning to individuals or groups engaging in illegitimate acts or making inflammatory statements that could disrupt public order. The caution, delivered by Peter Afunaya, the DSS spokesperson, comes in response to what the agency perceives as a concerning increase in incendiary comments from influential personalities and representatives of non-governmental entities.
The DSS emphasized the importance of avoiding inflammatory statements, citing the potential to disturb public peace and harmony. It expressed concern that such rhetoric could escalate tensions, fostering animosities and divisions among the population and potentially demarketing or subverting the country through misleading narratives.
Specifically addressing key players and supporters in the upcoming gubernatorial elections in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa States, the DSS urged adherence to the rules of engagement and electoral laws to prevent situations that could undermine the electoral processes. The agency highlighted its collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), sister security agencies, and relevant NGOs to ensure smooth elections.
The statement implored stakeholders to engage in respectful and constructive conversations, emphasizing the need for unity and peace for national development and security. The DSS cautioned against manipulative broadcast and monitoring activities and warned that individuals or groups engaging in illegitimate acts or inimical conduct to public order would face decisive legal action.
In a call for patriotism and collective responsibility, the DSS urged citizens to prioritize loyalty and love for the nation over individual or parochial interests. The agency emphasized that fostering dialogue and eschewing bitterness are essential for building a stronger and more secure future for Nigeria.
