Following a controversial Easter message posted on social media, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has issued an apology to the Christian community in Nigeria. The message, featuring a Point of Sale (PoS) machine with the caption "Jesus paid your debt, not your taxes," sparked outrage among Christians, including the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), which demanded an apology.
Although FIRS deleted the post, they clarified that it was not intended to denigrate Jesus Christ or offend religious sensibilities. In a statement, FIRS emphasized its non-religious stance and commitment to revenue collection for the nation's well-being, expressing regret for any unintended offense caused.
The incident highlights the delicate balance between creative engagement and religious sensitivities in public communications.
