In a significant development, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) court of justice has ruled that the government of Benin Republic must pay Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Igboho, 20 million CFA for what the court deemed "unlawful detention."
This decision follows Igboho's application filed on February 10, challenging his arrest and detention in Benin.
The ECOWAS court specified a three-month window for the payment. Igboho, a Yoruba Nation agitator, was arrested in July 2021 in Benin at the Nigerian government's request.
His detention triggered legal battles and fresh allegations in the Benin Republic court. Notably, his release in March 2022 and subsequent relocation to Germany marked a turning point in the case.
