The Nigeria Police Force urges Edo residents to vote in the gubernatorial election and return home promptly. Only accredited personnel will be allowed in public areas, with vehicular restrictions from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Enhanced security is implemented due to off-cycle election supporters from other states.
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has called on Edo State residents to vote in the upcoming gubernatorial election on Saturday, September 21, and return to their homes immediately afterward. Frank Mba, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) in charge of election security, stressed that only accredited individuals—such as observers, journalists, and election officials—will be allowed to remain in public areas during the voting period.
In an interview on Friday, Mba explained that the police would enforce restrictions on vehicular movement between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. to maintain security, adding that this adjustment was made based on citizen feedback. He also mentioned that because the election is off-cycle, it has drawn political supporters from other parts of the country, necessitating heightened security measures.
The DIG assured residents that law enforcement is committed to ensuring the safety of all voters, accredited personnel, and key stakeholders. This election will determine the successor to Governor Godwin Obaseki, whose second term is ending. Although 17 political parties are participating, the main contenders are the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Labour Party (LP).
