Edo State Government criticizes Bola Tinubu-led APC for deepening economic hardship in Nigeria. Commissioner Chris Nehikhare condemned federal policies like fuel subsidy removal and currency exchange rate unification, attributing them to economic instability and rising insecurity. With the governorship election approaching, Edo vows to uphold PDP leadership against alleged APC misinformation.
In the latest address by Hon. Chris Nehikhare, Edo State's Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, the government has expressed deep concerns over Nigeria's current socio-economic condition under the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC). Despite state-led interventions, Nehikhare highlighted ongoing hardships faced by Edo residents, attributing them to what he described as "gross mismanagement of the economy" by the APC over the past nine years.
Nehikhare specifically criticized the federal government's decision to remove fuel subsidies on May 29, 2023, arguing that it had led to economic instability and increased the risk of food shortages. He also pointed to the negative impact of the policy to unify the exchange rate, which he claimed had devalued the currency, raised inflation rates, and hindered business growth through heightened taxation and stringent regulations.
Addressing escalating security concerns, Nehikhare noted a resurgence in terrorist activities, including suicide bombings, which he attributed to the APC's alleged failure to effectively manage national security.
Turning to Edo State's political landscape, Nehikhare accused the APC of being out of touch with the prevailing difficulties faced by the populace. He criticized the party for spreading misinformation and baseless allegations of fraud against the state government.
In particular, Nehikhare scrutinized APC's gubernatorial candidate, Monday Okpebholo, questioning his literacy and capability to articulate a coherent vision for Edo State. With the gubernatorial election slated for September 21, 2024, Nehikhare expressed confidence in the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to sustain leadership in Edo State, urging residents to reject APC's tactics and support PDP for continued progress and prosperity.
"Come September 21, it is PDP or nothing," Nehikhare declared, underscoring the government's commitment to maintaining PDP's leadership in Edo State amidst what he termed as APC's attempts to mislead the electorate.
