In a surprising turn of events ahead of the September 2024 governorship election in Edo State, the Edo Obidient Movement, a non-political body, has officially distanced itself from the Labour Party (LP) and its gubernatorial candidate, Olumide Akpata.

The movement, which previously supported the LP during the 2023 general elections due to its allegiance to presidential candidate Peter Obi, has expressed profound disappointment with the party's performance and leadership.

Speaking at a press conference held at the NUJ Secretariat in Benin City, the spokesperson for the Edo Obedient Movement, Ikhuenbor Figo, emphasized that the LP failed to live up to expectations as a viable alternative to the dominant political parties in Nigeria.

The movement condemned the LP's primary election process, accusing party leaders of engaging in dishonorable and unpatriotic conduct. Figo announced the group's decision to sever all ties with the LP and its candidate for the Edo 2024 governorship campaign.

Additionally, the Obidient Movement called on Peter Obi to intervene and overhaul the leadership of the LP ahead of the 2027 general elections, signaling its continued support for Obi's political endeavors.

The group hinted at unveiling its preferred political party and candidate for the upcoming Edo governorship election in the near future, underscoring its commitment to effecting meaningful change in the state's political landscape.
