Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) leads the Edo State governorship race by over 48,000 votes after results from 16 local government areas. His closest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), trails behind. Two more LGAs are expected to announce results soon.
Senator Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, is leading in the Edo State governorship race with a significant margin of over 48,000 votes ahead of his closest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Results from 16 local government areas (LGAs) have been declared at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) collation center in Benin City, with Okpebholo securing victories in 10 of them.
Okpebholo, currently representing Edo Central in the Senate, has garnered 244,549 votes, while Ighodalo trails with 195,954 votes, winning six LGAs. Labour Party (LP) candidate Olumide Akpata is a distant third, receiving 13,346 votes.
As the results continue to trickle in, two more LGAs are expected to announce their tallies later in the day. The election has sparked interest, particularly among APC supporters, who remain optimistic about Okpebholo's potential victory.
However, the process hasn't been without tension. The presence of Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki and Ighodalo at the collation center has led to protests from APC members. INEC has since described their visit as unnecessary, adding further intrigue to an already heated electoral process. The final results from the remaining LGAs are highly anticipated as Edo residents await the conclusion of the election.
