EduRank's list of the top 10 universities in Africa for 2024 has been released, and no Nigerian university made the cut. The rankings, based on research outputs, non-academic prominence, and alumni influence, analyzed data from over 1,100 universities across the continent.
While the University of Ibadan ranks 13th in Africa, the top 10 universities predominantly hail from South Africa, Egypt, Uganda, and Kenya.
They include the University of Cape Town, University of the Witwatersrand, University of Stellenbosch, University of Pretoria, Cairo University, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Makerere University, University of Nairobi, University of Johannesburg, and University of South Africa.
This revelation has ignited discussions on the state of higher education in Nigeria, prompting calls for increased investment and reforms to enhance competitiveness.
Some commenters express disappointment, highlighting the need for improvement in Nigeria's education sector, while others stress the importance of private sector involvement in funding higher education.
