Team Nigeria athletes are making waves at the African Games in Ghana, not only clinching medals but also breaking records. Ese Brume showcased her prowess in the women’s Long Jump event by securing gold with an impressive first-round jump of 6.92m. Although this would have been a record-breaking leap, the excessive wind reading prevented her from achieving that feat. Nonetheless, Brume successfully defended her 2019 title, earning a ticket to the Paris 2024 Olympics. She joins an elite group of Nigerian athletes, becoming the second Long Jumper in African Games history to defend a title.
While Brume basks in her victory, another rising star, Prestina Ochonogor, deserves recognition for her bronze medal win with a personal best of 6.67m in her international debut. Unfortunately, Ruth Usoro narrowly missed the podium with a 6.62m jump. In the men’s 200m semifinals, Consider Ekanem and Alaba Akintola secured spots in the final with impressive times, while Olajide Olayinka advanced in the women’s 200m event.
Team Nigeria continues to dominate the track and field events, amassing eight gold medals so far. With athletics events concluding soon, expectations are high for more medal-winning performances from Nigerian athletes, showcasing their talent and determination on the continental stage.
