Former Attorney General Kanu Agabi criticizes Nigerian politicians who rig elections, calling their reliance on divine help hypocritical. He urges judicial reforms to address the overwhelming number of election cases and emphasizes the need for ethical leadership to drive Nigeria forward.
Kanu Agabi, a former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), expressed strong views about the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process during an appearance on Inside Sources on Channels Television. He argued that the widespread suspicion surrounding elections justifies legal challenges, stating that it is unacceptable for politicians who have manipulated their way into power to seek divine assistance when facing challenges in office.
Agabi, who served under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, emphasized that the core issue lies not within the laws themselves, but in the lack of ethical leaders willing to uphold them. He urged the need for self-reform within Nigeria, asserting that the Constitution has been amended multiple times, yet the problems persist.
The former AGF also highlighted the burden placed on the judiciary, which is overwhelmed by a high volume of electoral disputes. He called for the appointment of more judges and magistrates to alleviate this pressure. Agabi lamented that many elections are marred by allegations of rigging, suggesting that these suspicions stem from a broader lack of trust in the system.
He criticized leaders who misappropriate their positions for personal gain, stating that one cannot sincerely call upon God while holding office obtained through deceit. Agabi urged the need for a return to ethical governance to help steer Nigeria towards progress.
