The Labour Party has made a groundbreaking decision at its recent national convention, granting former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi the right of first refusal for its presidential ticket in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Obi, who previously contested under the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election, emerged as the party's preferred candidate following a thorough assessment of his conduct before, during, and after the 2023 elections.
The party's decision, outlined in a communiqué signed by National Chairman Julius Abure and National Secretary Umar Ibrahim, underscores Obi's proven leadership and commitment to national development. Additionally, the convention recommended Abia State Governor Alex Otti to represent the party in the forthcoming elections, reaffirming its confidence in his leadership.
Despite the initial controversy surrounding the convention's venue change from Umuahia to Nnewi amidst protests by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the party stood firm in its decisions, re-electing Abure as party chairman.
The convention's communiqué highlighted the nation's pressing challenges, emphasizing the need for effective governance to address issues of security, economic instability, inflation, and unemployment. With this move, the Labour Party aims to position itself as a viable alternative and advocate for meaningful change in Nigeria's political landscape
