FCT Minister Nyesom Wike criticized the European Union (EU) on Monday for its report condemning Nigeria's 2023 presidential election. He argued that the report did not accurately represent the election's reality and instead created a misleading impression, particularly in Rivers State. Wike expressed his discontent during a visit from EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Samuela Isopi, in his office.
Wike stressed that the EU's role should have been that of an observer during the election, not one to provide a report that does not reflect the true state of Nigerian democracy. He highlighted the differences in legal and environmental contexts between Nigeria and the EU, suggesting that they cannot have identical laws.
The European Union Election Observation Mission (EUEOM), led by Chief Observer Barry Andres, had presented its final report on the general elections in June. The report included six priority areas with recommendations.
Wike emphasized the importance of cooperation and agreement on specific development areas to stimulate economic growth. He urged foreign partners to focus on strategic development for the Federal Capital Territory and the entire country.
In response, EU Ambassador Isopi clarified that the report was compiled by independent observers and was not related to her own operations. She pledged the EU's commitment to collaborate with the minister to promote development in the territory and beyond
