Villagers in Umuchima, Abia State, flee as unknown gunmen kill an alleged Army informant days after a military operation dismantled a suspected camp. The attackers' return has sparked fear, forcing residents to relocate. Authorities pledge intensified security measures to combat ongoing violence and restore peace to the troubled community.
Fear has gripped Umuchima village in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State following a deadly attack by unknown gunmen. A male resident, accused of providing intelligence to the Nigerian Army about the gunmen's activities, was targeted and killed.
The incident occurred shortly after a military operation by the Nigerian Army’s 14 Brigade, codenamed Operation Udo Ka, dismantled a suspected criminal camp in the area. Residents said the gunmen stormed the village in a swift, well-coordinated attack.
Terrified villagers, fearing further violence, have fled their homes, seeking refuge in neighboring communities. Many reportedly took only essential belongings, vowing to return once the situation stabilizes.
One displaced resident, speaking anonymously, described the atmosphere of fear: “They came like soldiers, accusing one of our own of being an informant and killing him.”
Days earlier, military personnel had conducted a large-scale raid in Umuchima, reportedly using over 15 vehicles, including armored personnel carriers, to target gunmen hiding near a river separating Abia from Mbaise in Imo State.
Authorities in Abia State have promised to ramp up efforts to restore peace. The government, along with security agencies, has pledged to intensify actions against armed groups causing unrest in the region.
