Former federal lawmakers, Senator Andrew Uchendu and Honourable Dachung Bagos, have criticized the Federal Government's decision to reduce electricity subsidies, deeming the timing inappropriate.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) recently announced a tariff increase for Band A customers, comprising those enjoying a 20-hour daily electricity supply. Speaking on Channels Television's Politics Today, Senator Uchendu, representing Rivers East, lamented the adverse impact of fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians, suggesting it was premature to introduce another subsidy cut.

Bagos, a former representative of Jos South and East Federal Constituency, echoed Uchendu's sentiments, questioning the lack of planning and measures to mitigate the effects of subsidy removal on citizens. He emphasized the necessity of subsidies to cushion economic burdens, citing global examples.

The ex-lawmakers cautioned against overlooking the plight of ordinary Nigerians amidst policy changes, emphasizing the importance of thoughtful planning and consideration for citizens' welfare.
