The Federal Government has successfully raised N585 million towards settling fines for inmates, aiming to alleviate congestion in correctional centers across Nigeria. Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, represented by Dr. Anayo Romanus-Nzekwe, disclosed this during the release of 150 inmates in Kano, emphasizing the government's commitment to addressing the plight of over 4,000 inmates detained due to an inability to pay fines.
The release in Kano is part of a nationwide effort aligned with President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda. The funds were raised through philanthropic individuals, groups, and corporate bodies, contributing to the humane decongestion of custodial centers. In Kano alone, N13.4 million was spent, benefitting inmates with fines and compensation not exceeding N1 million.
The released individuals, totaling 150, received N10,000 each to support their return to their homes. The initiative aims not only to decongest prisons but also to provide inmates with training for self-reliance upon discharge.
The Federal Government encourages communities to welcome the returning inmates without stigmatization, emphasizing their second chance to contribute positively to society. Similar efforts were undertaken in Gombe State, where 185 inmates were pardoned and freed under the recommendation of the Criminal Justice Reform Committee, aligning with the broader goal of decongesting custodial facilities.
