The federal Government revealed on Wednesday its decision to cut public transport fares for Nigerians by a significant 50%. The news was disclosed by the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, during a press conference in Abuja, marking the commencement of a presidential intervention in public transportation to celebrate the yuletide season.
Alake conveyed that the special discounted holiday season fare would take effect from Thursday, December 21, and continue until January 4, 2024. The move aims to provide substantial relief to Nigerians planning to travel during this festive period.
Addressing the media, Alake outlined the specifics of the intervention, stating, "From tomorrow, Nigerians willing to travel can board public transport via minibuses, luxury buses at a 50% discount of the current cost and all our train services on the routes the trains currently serve at zero cost to and fro on their travels this holiday season."
The Minister highlighted that President Bola Tinubu approved this generous gesture as a demonstration of his love for Nigerians. The initiative allows citizens to travel to visit their loved ones and hometowns without the usual stress and financial burden associated with high transportation costs during the holiday season.
Alake emphasized President Tinubu's commitment to ensuring a memorable and happy holiday season for Nigerians. He revealed that the President has directed various security agencies, including the police, Department of State Services (DSS), and the military, to collaborate and ensure a safe holiday period across the country.
"As we wish all Nigerians a great holiday season, we implore everyone to be law-abiding, be security-conscious, be our brother's keepers, and extend every goodwill to our families, friends, and neighbors," Alake urged. "While we celebrate and enjoy all the social activities that come with the season, let us also remember to celebrate in moderation
