Federal Housing Authority (FHA) has identified 677 houses in Festac Town, Awumo-Odofin area of Lagos, for complete demolition. Additionally, 744 other structures face partial demolition due to developers' violations. Akintola Olagbemiro, the Southwest Zonal Manager for FHA, revealed these measures during an on-the-spot assessment of the affected area.
Olagbemiro expressed concern over developers constructing in swampy areas without meeting requirements, turning the region into an unauthorized slum. Francisca Michael-James, Deputy General Manager for FHA's Urban and Regional Planning in the Southwest, lamented developers' non-compliance with directives and announced plans for imminent enforcement, with penalties for building owners who fail to adhere to regulations.
The FHA aims to clear the road, partially demolishing some structures for a right of way, as part of their effort to reclaim the designated property and maintain safety standards. The impending demolition raises questions about the broader implications for affected residents and the ongoing battle against unauthorized urban development
