Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior and Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmati were crowned the FIFA Best Players of 2024 during the awards ceremony in Doha on Tuesday. Vinicius secured the men’s award after an outstanding season, while Bonmati claimed the women’s honor for the second consecutive year.
Vinicius Junior’s impressive year included helping Real Madrid win La Liga and the UEFA Champions League. The Brazilian forward contributed 24 goals and 11 assists in 39 matches, playing a key role in their European success. Notably, he scored in the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund, sealing the club’s 2-0 victory. His performance also included a brace against Bayern Munich in the semi-final and a hat-trick against Barcelona in the Supercopa final.
In his acceptance speech, Vinicius reflected on his humble beginnings and dedicated the award to children growing up in similarly challenging conditions. “It was impossible to think of getting here,” he said, thanking his family, teammates, and Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti.
On the women’s side, Aitana Bonmati continued her dominance by guiding Barcelona to a historic quadruple, including the Spanish league, Copa de la Reina, Supercopa de España, and Women’s Champions League titles. Bonmati was instrumental in the Champions League final, scoring and delivering a standout performance in Barcelona’s 2-0 win over Lyon.
