Detained former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, has been released on bail after spending 151 days in custody.
The Abuja High Court ordered his release, despite objections from the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Justice Olukayode Adeniyi ruled that there must be an end to detention without trial.
The court directed Emefiele's release to his lawyers, instructing him to surrender all international travel documents. The judge emphasized that the EFCC had not complied with an earlier order for unconditional release or production for bail consideration.
Emefiele, suspended by President Bola Tinubu on June 9, faces charges including illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, as well as a 20-count corruption charge.
The court adjourned further proceedings to November 17. Emefiele left the court premises after the hearing amid concerns about potential re-arrest by security operatives.
