Muhammad Nami, the former Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), has revealed his ambitious tax collection goals and expressed gratitude in a farewell statement following his replacement by President Bola Tinubu. Nami commended both former President Muhammadu Buhari and President Tinubu for allowing him to serve the nation for nearly four years.
During his tenure, Nami touted significant achievements, including the collection of over N8 trillion in taxes within eight months. He expressed confidence in his ability to set a new tax collection record of at least N13 trillion by the end of the fiscal year. He also highlighted his successful efforts in raising the Tax-to-GDP ratio from 6% to 10.86% within two years, surpassing his initial target of 10%.
Nami left the FIRS with a sense of accomplishment, emphasizing that he was departing from a service that adhered to world-class best practices. He encouraged the agency's staff, taxpayers, and Nigerians to offer the same level of cooperation to the incoming Executive Chairman, Zacchaeus Adedeji, to ensure his success in continuing the important work of tax collection in Nigeria.
