A stern warning comes from Professor Attahiru Jega, former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as he joins the chorus advocating for the urgent restructuring of Nigeria.

During a lecture at the Bauchi State University's maiden convocation, Jega highlighted the structural, systemic, and value-oriented challenges facing the nation.

Insisting on evidence-based constitutional reforms, he urged the Federal Government to decentralize powers and resources to state and local governments, drawing inspiration from model federations like India, Canada, and the USA. Jega called for a strategic amendment of the Electoral Act, reforms in judiciary integrity, improved INEC appointment processes, and constitutional recognition of equal citizen rights.

Emphasizing the need for comprehensive security reforms, he underscored the importance of efficient policing and armed forces training for maintaining internal law and order.

Jega's call for action echoes concerns that failure to restructure by 2027 may label Nigeria as a failed state, emphasizing the imperative of safeguarding citizens' welfare and security.
