The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed former U17 World Cup-winning coach, Manu Garba, as the new Head Coach of the Nigeria Under-17 male national team, the Golden Eaglets. This decision follows the disappointing performance of Nigeria's U-17 boys in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations youth tournament, which dashed their hopes of participating in the 2024 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Nduka Ugbade, who previously led the team, stepped down from his role, leaving the coaching position vacant. In response, the NFF turned to Garba, who led the Golden Eaglets to victory in the FIFA U17 World Cup in 2013, securing Nigeria's fourth trophy in the competition.
Garba's previous success with the team included notable players such as Kelechi Iheanacho, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Isaac Success. Under his guidance, the Golden Eaglets showcased impressive performances, including a remarkable 6-1 victory over Mexico in the opening game of the tournament.
With his wealth of experience and proven track record, Garba is expected to lead the Golden Eaglets in their preparations for the upcoming WAFU B U17 Championship in Ghana next month. Nigerian football enthusiasts are optimistic that Garba's return will rejuvenate the team and reignite their pursuit of success on the international stage.
