A devastating boat accident in Kogi State has resulted in multiple casualties, with ongoing rescue efforts saving 24 individuals who are currently receiving medical treatment. The tragedy occurred when a boat carrying passengers from Kupa Ebe to Katcha Market capsized near Kpata Danbo.

Governor Usman Ododo expressed profound grief over the incident and extended condolences to the affected families. He directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to provide urgent relief materials to those impacted and instructed the Ministry of Health to ensure adequate care for the survivors.

Authorities, including the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), River Marshals, and local officials, have been lauded for their collaborative rescue efforts. Their actions aim to mitigate further loss of life and provide support to the affected communities.

In response to the accident, the state government has called for stricter enforcement of safety measures in water transportation. Officials emphasized the importance of avoiding nighttime travel and adopting comprehensive safety protocols to protect passengers and operators.

Governor Ododo also urged rescue teams to intensify their efforts to find any remaining survivors. “We mourn those we have lost and pray for strength for their families during this challenging time,” he stated.
