Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has responded to concerns regarding the proposed establishment of a Sharia court in Oyo Town, reassuring the public that he will uphold the Nigerian Constitution. His comments follow the Supreme Council for Shari'ah in Nigeria's plan to set up a court in the area.

Makinde emphasized in a video shared on social media that while individuals or groups are free to advocate for such initiatives, they must operate within the boundaries of the law. He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that any actions taken will comply with the Nigerian Constitution, which he swore to uphold.

The Sharia court inauguration, initially scheduled for January 11, 2025, at the Muslim Community Islamic Centre in Oyo Town, has since been postponed indefinitely. A flier circulated by the group confirmed the postponement, stating that Islam promotes peace and clarifying the delay in the event.

In his response, Makinde made it clear that if the proposed Sharia court complies with legal standards, there would be no issue. However, he also warned that any action outside the law would face his firm opposition. He concluded that his priority remains to ensure that the laws of Nigeria are followed in Oyo State, regardless of external pressures.
