In the midst of escalating tensions with aviation unions and allegations of worker mistreatment, Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State has vehemently denied any feud with the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). The governor addressed the issue on the Television Continental (TVC) program "Politics Tonight" on Thursday, asserting that Imo workers are content with his leadership.
The recent directive from aviation unions to withdraw services to all Owerri flights across the country was a response to what they described as mayhem unleashed on workers, coupled with the state government's perceived insensitivity to their plight. This decision coincided with a proposed strike in the state by the NLC and Trade Union Congress (TUC) following the reported arrest of NLC president Joe Ajaero.
Ajaero was allegedly picked up by heavily armed police officers from the Imo council secretariat and, according to the NLC, was beaten and blindfolded immediately after his arrest. The Imo State Police Command countered this, stating that Ajaero was taken into protective custody to prevent a potential lynching by a mob.
Governor Uzodinma, in his response, dismissed the notion of a feud with organized labor in the state. He accused Ajaero of prioritizing political ambitions over his duties in Abuja, particularly concerning the Labour Party's involvement in producing a governor for Imo.
Uzodinma highlighted what he perceived as an advantage turned disadvantage — the fact that the NLC president is from Imo. The governor challenged Ajaero to publish the names of government workers owed salaries, emphasizing the support he claims to have from Imo workers.
Additionally, Uzodinma addressed allegations of intimidation against other political parties in the state, categorically denying the accusations. He portrayed himself as a humble and God-fearing leader, emphasizing his dedication to the well-being of the people of Imo State.
While the governor vowed not to be distracted by what he labeled as "falsehoods" and "blackmails," he expressed confidence that history would vindicate him in the face of these challenges.
