Three students of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, were feared dead in a stampede during a rice distribution by the government. The incident unfolded at the convocation square, where bags of rice were stored awaiting Governor Abdullahi Sule’s arrival for distribution.
Witnesses reported that as students crowded the area, they overwhelmed security, resulting in a chaotic stampede. Moses Ajah, an eyewitness, described students struggling with police over the rice, leading to injuries and hospitalizations.
Some students managed to seize rice bags and fled to their hostels before the governor's arrival. Police intervened to retrieve the palliatives. Abraham Ekpo, the university's spokesman, confirmed the incident but lacked detailed information.
Governor Sule had recently initiated a palliative program for tertiary students, distributing rice and cash at other institutions. The tragic turn of events underscores the heightened desperation for relief amid economic challenges
