In a decisive move to tackle environmental degradation and promote sustainable waste management practices, the Lagos State Government is set to initiate full enforcement of the ban on Styrofoam food containers across the state, commencing this Monday, February 19.

The announcement was made by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, during a high-level meeting with all market leaders convened at the BlueRoof in Alausa, Ikeja. Wahab emphasized the urgent need for action, citing the detrimental impact of Styrofoam usage on public health and the environment.

Enforcement officers from various agencies, including LAGESC/KAI, Environmental Health Officials, LAWMA Police, and the Ministry, will be deployed to ensure strict compliance with the ban. Any individuals found in possession of Styrofoam containers in shops, stores, or outlets will face confiscation and potential penalties.

Wahab stressed the imperative of cleanliness, urging traders to refrain from selling on railway lines and roads while emphasizing the importance of waste segregation and patronizing licensed waste management operators.

The Commissioner highlighted the government's commitment to promoting alternative, eco-friendly packaging solutions across the metropolis. Expressing concern over unsanitary market conditions, he urged market leaders to prioritize cleanliness and discourage illegal trading practices.

The Special Adviser on Environment, Mr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, echoed Wahab's sentiments, charging market leaders with the responsibility of maintaining cleanliness within their respective marketplaces. He urged against selling on roadsides and underscored the importance of functional public toilets to combat open defecation.

Managing Director of Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegeshin, emphasized the government's zero-tolerance stance on filth and indiscriminate waste disposal. He reiterated the administration's commitment to creating a clean, healthy city conducive to the well-being of all residents.

In response, market leaders pledged their cooperation with the government's initiatives, committing to adopt measures aimed at ensuring cleanliness in markets and their surroundings.

With the full-scale enforcement of the Styrofoam ban set to kick off, Lagos State demonstrates its unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and public health, signaling a pivotal step towards a cleaner, greener future for all residents.
