In a disturbing incident that underscores the challenges faced by Nigerian women, a 27-year-old man, identified as Gabriel Gibson or "Ogidi", has been arrested in Enugu State, South-east Nigeria, for allegedly assaulting his friend's wife. According to reports from Premium Times Nigeria, The alleged crime occurred in the early hours of 18 August in the victim's residence.
The police spokesperson in Enugu State, Daniel Ndukwe, a deputy superintendent of police, confirmed the arrest in a statement released on Wednesday. He detailed that Gibson had visited the apartment in his friend's absence and committed the act. The police did not specify the exact location within the state where the incident occurred. "The case is undergoing further investigation," Ndukwe added.
This incident brings to light the broader issue of violence against women in Nigeria. In 2015, the country enacted the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, which criminalises all forms of violence against women and girls, including assault, female circumcision, and forceful ejection. Those found guilty face severe penalties, ranging from life imprisonment to a maximum of 14 years, depending on the offender's age and the nature of the violence.
Despite these legal measures, incidents of violence against women persist. For instance, in July 2022, an Ado-Ekiti High Court sentenced a 49-year-old man to four years for assaulting an 11-year-old girl. Such cases highlight the urgent need for continued efforts to protect the rights and safety of Nigerian women.
