Independent National Electoral Commission has declared Hope Uzodinma, the incumbent Governor of Imo State and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of the recent governorship election. Uzodinma garnered an impressive 540,308 votes, dominating his opponents with a substantial lead.
The announcement was made by Professor Abayomi Fashina, the Returning Officer for the Imo State Governorship Election and Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti. Fashina highlighted that Uzodinma secured the highest number of valid votes cast, securing his position for a second term in office.
The electoral landscape unfolded with Uzodinma sweeping victory in all 27 local government areas of the state during the November 11, 2023, governorship poll. The results underscore the widespread support for the governor across the entire state.
As Uzodinma celebrates his reelection, attention turns to the significant margin by which he surpassed his rivals. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Sam Anyanwu, secured 71,503 votes, while Athan Achonu of the Labour Party (LP) polled 64,081 votes. The clear mandate from the people raises questions about the factors contributing to Uzodinma's popularity and the implications for the political landscape in Imo State.
