The House of Representatives has initiated steps to establish the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages, following a bill that passed its first reading on Thursday. Sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and eight other lawmakers, the university aims to promote the study of Nigerian languages and cultures.
According to the bill, the university will provide opportunities for individuals to acquire higher education in various Nigerian languages without discrimination. It mandates that the President visit the institution at least once every five years, ensuring oversight and support for its initiatives.
The proposed university will develop academic programs leading to diplomas, degrees, and postgraduate research, focusing on skills relevant to national development. Its mission includes conducting research and outreach programs to enhance understanding and usage of Nigerian languages.
Furthermore, the university will collaborate with other institutions involved in training and research in Nigerian languages, emphasizing adaptive and developmental skills. The council of the university will have the authority to recommend the removal of members for misconduct, subject to the President’s approval.
This significant initiative is expected to foster the growth of Nigerian languages, contributing to cultural preservation and national unity. The bill is anticipated to progress to a second reading in the coming weeks.
