Recent reports from Human Rights Watch have brought to light Israel's use of white phosphorus during military operations in Gaza and Lebanon - this has put civilians at significant risk of severe injuries, with the deployment of white phosphorus in densely populated regions such as Gaza increasing the danger to civilians and violating international humanitarian laws.

Human Rights Watch has reported that videos from October 10th and 11th, 2023, show multiple airbursts of artillery-fired white phosphorus over Gaza City port and along the Israel-Lebanon border. The use of such weapons in populated regions is particularly worrying due to their potential to cause excruciating burns and long-term suffering. The Middle East and North Africa director at Human Rights Watch, Lama Fakih, has emphasized the indiscriminate nature of white phosphorus when airbursts in urban areas, leading to significant harm to civilians.

This development raises concerns for Nigerians regarding the broader implications of international conflicts on global peace and security. With its significant diaspora population and international engagements, Nigeria is not immune to the ripple effects of such conflicts. Using controversial weapons like white phosphorus can set precedents that might be adopted in other regional conflicts, potentially endangering Nigerian interests and citizens abroad.

Despite the ongoing conflict, Israeli authorities have yet to comment on their use of white phosphorus. However, the international community, including Nigeria, will be closely monitoring the situation, advocating for the safety of civilians and adherence to international norms.
