On Wednesday, May 15, a woman narrated how she got a donation from a Facebook user to pay for a cesarean section to have her baby. She said her husband objected to the CS, took her home to give her herbal medicine, used the donated money for other purposes, and then abandoned her and the baby at the hospital after birth.
In her original account posted to Facebook, the wife claimed her husband objected to the C-section, took her home to give her herbal medicine instead, and then used the money donated by a kind stranger for the procedure to buy a phone and a dog rather than pay the hospital bills.
However, the husband is pushing back against these claims in his lengthy Facebook post. He says his wife's behavior changed and she became difficult once the Facebook user made the large donation. The husband states it was his wife who initially did not want to be in the hospital, so he brought her home for herbal remedies.
But when her situation worsened, he says he organized getting her back to the hospital at the urging of neighbors and the donation provider, who stressed agreeing to the C-section if needed to save her life. The husband claims his wife only gave him 100,000 naira of the donated funds, not 240,000 as she said, which he used to pay for blood, tests, and medicines.
He says he then had to leave briefly to request partial leave from his job, and by the time he returned his wife was scolding him, though he tried to ignore it and ensure her surgery went smoothly. The husband vehemently denies abandoning his wife and firstborn child, saying "Why would I abandon my first blood?" He accuses his wife of an "unconscious blackmail" potentially to get more donations.
