Edo Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu celebrated the All Progressives Congress (APC) victory in the gubernatorial election, taunting Governor Godwin Obaseki for losing his Local Government Area. Shaibu claimed his consistent wins vindicated him after a prior impeachment and criticized Obaseki for sidelining party members, contributing to the PDP's defeat.
Philip Shaibu, deputy governor of Edo, expressed excitement following the All Progressives Congress (APC) victory in the recent gubernatorial election. On September 21, 2024, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared APC candidate, Monday Okpebholo, as the winner with 291,667 votes, surpassing his nearest competitor, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 247,274 votes.
Shaibu, who had a falling out with Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, taunted the governor for losing his Local Government Area (LGA) to the APC. Obaseki’s Oredo LGA, from which he hails, saw APC win with 30,780 votes while Ighodalo secured 24,938 votes. In contrast, Shaibu’s Etsako West LGA delivered 32,107 votes for APC against PDP’s 17,483.
Shaibu, who was previously impeached in April 2024 but reinstated by the court in July, celebrated his personal electoral victories, noting that he had consistently won his unit, ward, and LGA. He claimed his success "vindicated" him from accusations that he could not secure his constituency.
Additionally, Shaibu criticized Obaseki for sidelining key party members, which he attributed to the PDP’s loss in the election. According to him, Obaseki's actions alienated many, contributing to the party’s defeat. Shaibu urged the governor to apologize to the people of Edo for his missteps.
