The ICPC has confirmed an investigation into NAHCON over the N90 billion hajj subsidy. Officials were arrested for not responding to inquiries, but the commission did not shut down NAHCON. The ICPC emphasized its legal bounds, while NAHCON officials continued to assist with the probe.
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has confirmed its investigation into the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) regarding the N90 billion hajj subsidy. ICPC spokesperson Demola Bakare clarified that officials from NAHCON were detained for failing to respond to the commission's requests, but the commission did not shut down the NAHCON office. The arrested officials are currently cooperating with the investigation and have been released on bail.
Contrary to some reports, Bakare emphasized that the ICPC's actions were within legal limits and that the agency operates by the law. NAHCON’s spokesperson, Fatimah Usara, described the situation as typical, explaining that post-hajj queries and investigations are routine. She mentioned that NAHCON officials had been addressing ICPC's inquiries as required, and clarified that only one official, the Head of Procurement, was specifically targeted in this recent investigation.
Earlier in July, NAHCON Chairman Jalal Arabi had stated that the N90 billion allocated by President Bola Tinubu was used to subsidize the cost of the Hajj pilgrimage. Following this, Arabi was also summoned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further inquiries into the fund. The ICPC’s investigation continues as it seeks to ensure transparency and accountability in the handling of the hajj subsidy.
