Amidst the recent approval of an electricity tariff adjustment by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (Ikeja Electric) has unveiled data disclosing 41 areas in Lagos categorized under band 'A'.
These areas, representing a subset of consumers significantly affected by the new tariff structure mandated by the federal government, are set to experience substantial changes in their electricity billing. The adjustment, spearheaded by Vice Chairman of NERC, Musliu Oseni, entails a notable increase in tariffs for Band 'A' customers, who will now be charged N225 per kilowatt hour (KW/h), a significant hike from the previous N66.
Band 'A' customers are those fortunate to receive uninterrupted power supply for 20-24 hours daily, reflecting a mere 15 percent of the nation's 12 million electricity consumers.
This development poses significant implications for the affected residents and businesses, sparking debates over the fairness and sustainability of the new tariff structure. Ikeja Electric's revelation of the impacted areas in Lagos, spanning from Abule-Egba to Shomolu Business Units, underscores the widespread ramifications of the tariff adjustment, fueling discussions on affordability and equitable access to electricity across diverse socio-economic strata.
The listed areas include Ijaiye, Egbeda, Ogba, Ojodu, Oregun, PTC, Ago, Ajao, Ilupeju, Magodo, Mende, and Oworonshoki, among others, each facing the imminent impact of the tariff revision
