The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has assured Nigerian Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan that her complaint regarding her suspension from the Senate and allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio will be given due consideration.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, who was suspended for six months, brought her case to the IPU during the Women in Parliament session at the United Nations in New York. She described the Senate’s action as "unlawful" and urged global democratic bodies to intervene. Additionally, she accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, calling for accountability.
In response, IPU President Tulia Ackson confirmed that the organization had taken note of her concerns but emphasized the importance of a balanced approach. She stated that the IPU would also hear the other side before making any decisions, in line with its standard procedures.
“We have heard her concerns, and while it is important to acknowledge them, we will also allow the other side before taking necessary steps,” Ackson said.
Akpoti-Uduaghan’s case has sparked a wave of reactions, with many praising her resilience in challenging the Senate’s decision. Supporters on social media have hailed her as a fearless advocate for justice, while others have called for a thorough and impartial investigation into her claims.
