Former Lagos governorship candidate Jandor claims he would have defeated Governor Sanwo-Olu in 2023 if not for Peter Obi’s unexpected political wave. He argues that the Labour Party's rise in Lagos disrupted PDP’s chances. Jandor has since left PDP and is considering a new party for 2027.
Olajide Adediran, known as Jandor, has attributed his loss in the 2023 Lagos State governorship election to the unexpected rise of Peter Obi’s Labour Party (LP) in the state. Speaking on Channels Television's Politics Today, Jandor argued that the wave of support for Obi altered the political landscape, making it difficult for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to compete.
He explained that before the presidential election, the PDP was in a strong position, actively challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). However, Obi’s victory in Lagos during the presidential poll created a shift in voter sentiment, leading to a surge in LP’s popularity. This, he claimed, changed the dynamics of the governorship race, ultimately pushing him to third place.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the APC was declared the winner with 762,134 votes, while LP’s Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour secured 312,329 votes. Jandor finished with 62,449 votes. According to him, the PDP had been making significant strides before the presidential election changed everything.
Jandor, who initially led the Lagos4Lagos Movement within APC before defecting to PDP, has since left the party, citing internal sabotage. He expressed disappointment in PDP’s leadership for failing to address anti-party activities and is now exploring options with other political parties ahead of the 2027 elections.
Despite his loss, Jandor remains determined to contest again, emphasizing that his political journey is far from over. He believes that with the right strategy, he stands a strong chance in the next election.
