Austria sees rising demand for nurses, plumbers, and engineers, offering competitive salaries and visa pathways for international professionals amidst high living costs.
Austria has reported a significant increase in job vacancies, with around 196,400 positions remaining unfilled in early 2024, marking an 8.5% rise from the previous quarter. The demand is notably high in sectors such as services, manufacturing, and public administration, highlighting a critical need for skilled professionals. Key roles currently in demand include nurses, plumbers, electricians, and engineers, according to the latest data from EURES.
The current dynamics of the Austrian labor market reflect shortages in essential sectors, prompting the government to enhance its recruitment of international talent. Skilled workers are being welcomed through various visa programs designed for non-European Union citizens. These include the D Visa, suitable for long-term stays exceeding 90 days, the Red-White-Red card, favored among highly skilled workers, and the EU Blue Card, aimed at individuals with advanced educational qualifications.
Austria offers competitive salaries across different sectors to attract prospective foreign workers. Annual earnings for positions such as General Practitioners average €162,974, Registered Nurses €69,552, Electrical Engineers €75,384, Automotive Mechanics €43,001, and Plumbers €53,688. Despite these attractive wages, Austria's high cost of living, ranking 19th globally and 7th in Europe, remains a significant financial consideration, particularly in urban centers.
The initiative aims not only to address labor shortages but also to facilitate the effective integration of skilled professionals into Austrian society. As Austria continues to refine its immigration policies, the focus remains on sustainable economic growth through the enhancement of the skilled workforce.
