The tragic fuel tanker explosion in Jigawa State has claimed 209 lives, injured 99 others, and devastated 167 families, according to Hafizu Inuwa, Chairman of the Jigawa Tanker Explosion Investigation Panel.
The incident, which occurred on October 14 in Majiya town, prompted Governor Umar Namadi to establish a 25-member investigative committee to determine its causes and suggest preventive measures.
Presenting the report in Dutse, Inuwa revealed that 38 victims remain hospitalized, while 61 others have been discharged. The explosion also destroyed properties worth millions of naira. The committee identified several contributing factors, including a damaged speed breaker, potholes near the scene, night driving, and speeding.
Additionally, the inferno was reportedly ignited by the friction of metallic containers as individuals attempted to scoop spilled fuel.
The panel recommended regular inspections and enforcement of safety protocols for petroleum transporters, the establishment of trauma and burns units in health facilities, and the creation of a road traffic control agency.
It also suggested upgrading emergency response centers and providing social protection for vulnerable victims through programs like the Danmodi Care Programme.
Inuwa commended the state government for its swift response, support, and empathy toward the affected community. Governor Namadi assured the public of his commitment to implementing the committee’s recommendations to prevent similar disasters and enhance the safety of citizens.
