According to Major-General Waidi Shuaibu, the Theatre Commander of the North-East Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, troops from the 82 Division Task Force Battalion rescued Simon and her children on Wednesday in Gwoza Local Government Area. She was six months pregnant at the time of her rescue.
Shuaibu stated that Simon is the 18th Chibok girl to be rescued by the Nigerian military since the infamous mass abduction in April 2014, which sparked global outrage and the #BringBackOurGirls movement. He commended the efforts of the military in conducting operations deep within the terrorists' enclaves, which have facilitated the rescue of several captives.
Brigadier-General Abubakar Haruna, the Acting General Officer Commanding of the 7 Division, revealed that Simon received medical treatment and care from the division since her release.
The abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls in 2014 drew widespread condemnation and prompted international efforts to secure their safe return. While some of the girls have been rescued or found their way to freedom, many others remain in captivity, and their plight continues to be a source of concern for human rights organizations and the Nigerian government.
