Kano Governor Abba Yusuf faces backlash for spending N10.4 billion on office furniture in six months, exceeding budgets for vital sectors like education and health. Public outcry demands accountability and a reallocation of funds to essential services.
In the first six months of 2024, the Kano State government, under Governor Abba Yusuf, has spent a staggering N10.4 billion on office furniture and fittings. This expenditure significantly exceeds the entire year's budget of N3.9 billion allocated for such items, raising serious concerns about the state's spending priorities.
A review of the budget performance documents reveals that while N10.4 billion was spent on office aesthetics, only N4.2 billion was allocated for capital expenditure on water resources. Other critical sectors also saw limited funding: rural and community development received N179 million, education N2.5 billion, higher education N323.6 million, and health services N959 million, with an additional N1.3 billion for hospital and health center rehabilitation. In total, these crucial sectors received less funding than what was spent on office furniture.
This spending spree on office furnishings comes at a time when Kano State faces numerous developmental challenges, including inadequate healthcare facilities and chronic water scarcity. The decision to prioritize office aesthetics over essential services has sparked widespread criticism and calls for increased fiscal responsibility.
The Northern Patriotic Agenda (NPA), a regional advocacy group, recently urged Governor Yusuf to focus on delivering democratic dividends to Kano's residents rather than engaging in political grandstanding. The NPA highlighted the neglect of gubernatorial duties and the adverse impact on the state's development.
Public reaction on social media has been swift and intense. Many citizens have expressed their frustration and disbelief at the government's spending choices.
