Kano prepares for Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's signing of the amended emirates council bill amidst tightened security. The bill seeks to repeal the creation of five emirates established in 2019, sparking political tensions. Lawmakers reconvene to finalize the decision, with concerns over potential changes to the emirate system and the fate of deposed Emir Sanusi.
As Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf prepares to sign the amended emirates council bill in Kano, the state's House of Assembly reconvenes amidst heightened security measures. Armed police and civil defense personnel have taken positions around the assembly premises, signaling the significance of the impending decision.
The bill, aimed at repealing the creation of five emirates, passed its first reading with support from lawmakers of both the ruling New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).
Sponsored by Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa, the majority leader, the bill seeks to amend the Kano State Emirates Council Law 2019, which established the Kano, Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye emirates.
The proposed changes come amidst political tensions following the deposition of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi and subsequent amendments to the law. While there are concerns over the potential dissolution of the Bichi Emirate and the reinstatement of Sanusi, the assembly remains resolute in its decision to proceed with the amendment, emphasizing the need for legislative approval and adherence to due process.
