In Kano, hundreds of women, including local bread producers known as "Gurasa," took to the streets on February 2 to protest the soaring cost of living, particularly the steep rise in flour prices, a key ingredient in their staple food production.
Chanting slogans like "Everything is expensive," the women and children appealed for assistance, emphasizing their struggle to feed their families, especially as many are widows facing severe economic hardships.
Hajiya Fatima Auwal, the leader of the group, highlighted the challenges faced by their small-scale business due to the exorbitant price of flour, stressing that the situation has worsened with high inflation.
She revealed the drastic increase in flour prices from N16,000 to N43,000, expressing concern over the potential closure of many businesses and its broader impact on the community.
Auwal urged authorities to address the issue promptly to prevent further closures and mitigate the impact on the livelihoods of the Gurasa producers and their families.
